N4 OUR GUEST EDITOR Bruce Weber & David Bailey

What happens when two of the world’s most respected photographers meet the PureView power of the Nokia Lumia 1020?

We handed our pocket powerhouse to David Bailey and Bruce Weber, giants of the photography industry, whose images have helped shape modern photography, and set them to capture images of people at work and play on the streets of New York’s Harlem district.

More-used to toting a Leica or a Hasselblad, before the shoot, neither had experience of the Lumia 1020’s imaging capabilities: Weber hadn’t even used a digital camera for work before. But it didn’t take long before they saw the benefits, though: (continue in the print version)

Dreaming is the reason why i am alive. EDITOR’S LETTER N4 Winter project 2013-14

Dreaming is the reason why i am alive.

My whole life i’ve been playing this role of designer which, for the time being, i don’t feel like quitting, and maybe that’s the reason why i’ve been brainstorming that much that i just can’t control it and i don’t know which idea i want to express first.

The only universal truth is that summer comes after spring and fall does it after winter… And life goes on and never stops.

And the factory of ideas we started running with shooter some time ago is in constant movement, updating its engineering standards to keep going.

When it came to face this quarterly message, i wanted to review some of the texts i have dedicated you all, shooter magazine’s readers, in which i dealt with many dissimilar subjects (or not that dissimilar) such as marketing and dreams.

I could dedicate this missive to winter, writing about any of the typical proverbs such as “winter is summer’s heir”, or so.

Or i could anticipate you something about this wonderful issue, or any of the treasures that will bring the next one.

I must admit that writing this editor’s letter in an orthodox way seems almost impossible.

I can only but keep on doing this magazine shaped work and convene you to subsequent letters, aiming to continue sharing with you concerns and thoughts somehow correct and coherent. although i wouldn’t want to say goodbye without leaving you a question for consideration: are ideas being affected by this unceasing and irregular rhythm of the life we live in?

I’m beginning to think that as long as the ideas follow the pace…

@georgina214

The invisible hours. Death, iPhone 3GS. 2011

Observing the characters Giacomo Por portrays is akin to observing actors on an intimate stage. As Coleridge famously said, what happens is a «willing suspension of disbelief for the moment, which constitutes poetic faith». We are drawn into the character’s persona. We engage – both visually and verbally – with them. Giacomo’s mastery lies in his ability to portray his characters with such deftness that they breathe credible and forceful life into his words, lifting them off the paper and making them their own. As a result, we engage with them, we feel for them, we are – even if for a fleeting moment – part of them. @saturninofarandola.

@saturninofarandola.
